2008 Election

Last week AFANT provided both major political parties in the Territory with its proposed policies and actions for the next term of government. Teritory Labor Party has now released its election policy and Labor leader Paul Henderson has written to AFANT responding to the material we provided.

AFANT’s media release on Territory Labor policy

As the Territory election campaign enters its final week we have prepared a special newsletter for AFANT members in the NT who do not receive our email updates. We are also updating this web site as material comes to hand.
We developed a fairly comprehensive outline of what AFANT believes should be done in the next term of government and we provided it to both Territory Labor and the Country Liberals during the first week of the campaign. We also provided it to the media and a copy of the full media release and election document is available from the link on this page.
Labor leader Paul Henderson responded positively to our material on Saturday July 26 and a copy of his letter to Warren de With is linked below. You will also find links to Labor’s recreational fishing policy release and our media response to that release and the letter from Paul Henderson.

Country Liberals leader Terry Mills wrote to us on Friday 1 August and his letter is also linked here. We were pleased that the Country Liberals, like Labor, agreed to our proposal to produce a Territory recreational fishing development plan but the letter failed to address a range of issues which we put to the parties. We sought clarification on this but were informed that this letter, along with an earlier announcement on upgrading Palmerston boat ramp would be the full extent of the Country Liberals’ recreational fishing policy announcements. Obviously we are concerned that the policy does not address issues like the buy back of commercial barramundi fishing licences and a copy of a media release we issued in response to the Country Liberals’ policy is available from the link below.

STOP PRESS

After AFANT pointed out shortcomings in the Country Liberals’ recreational fishing policy in our media release yesterday (5 August) the CLP issued the media release linked here revising their policy to include new items such as the buy back of barramundi fishing licences (I have confirmed that the proposal is for a total of six licences) and the subsequent closure of Bynoe Harbour and the Finniss River. It also includes a commitment to major upgrading of Palmerston boat ramp.
