FISH SMART

Fish for the future

The Northern Territory has some of the best fishing in the world. It’s part of our great lifestyle and it’s important we fish smart to keep it that way.

Only take home what you need. If you’re not going to eat the fish, release them, that way we can all enjoy great hook ups now and in the future. Stop the waste. Think twice before opening the esky, don’t kill fish and then waste them later.

Make sure you take the time to find out about fish possession limits and other regulations that apply in the Territory. Get caught with too many fish, and you could lose your vehicle, boat and gear, as well as copping a hefty fine. Our fisheries regulations ensure fish for the future. ...more info

Catch and release ensures fish for the future and we need to release fish correctly to give them the best chance of survival. There are some simple things you can do like using barbless hooks and knotless landing nets and getting fish back into the water as soon as possible. Remember, gently does it. ...more info

The safety of your boat and people on it is your responsibility. Make sure you’re carrying the right safety gear; know the water, know the tides and definitely know what the weather is doing. Let someone know where you’re going and when you’ll be back. Fish Smart and fish safe! ...more info

Using boat ramps correctly helps you get on the water faster. Be ready to launch when you get to the ramp. Don’t waste time as others may be waiting. If there’s room for two boats, keep to one side; and take your turn retrieving. Don’t be the cause of boat ramp rage.

Littering our waterways definitely isn’t smart fishing. Secure your rubbish in your boat, take it home, or use the bins provided at the boat ramp. Don’t clean or dispose of fish near boat ramps unless facilities are provided. You don’t know who could be waiting.

Recreational fishers are our eyes and ears on the water. You’re on the spot to help protect our fishery and our environment. Know how to recognising and report on illegal, dangerous, and environmentally damaging activities on our waterways. Keep your eyes on the water. If you see it, report it! ...more info
